Description
We’re looking for a Senior/Intermediate AS400 (iSeries) & Trimble TMS Software Engineer to stabilize, maintain, and support a mission-critical, 24/7 transportation and warehouse environment.
In this role, you will absorb critical tribal knowledge from an aging contractor base, eliminate single-point-of-failure risks, and play a vital part in high-pressure system migrations and future technology roadmaps—all while operating seamlessly as a natural extension of our client's internal team.
Responsibilities
You’ll work closely with the Technology Owner, internal operations, and external vendors to deliver reliable, 100% quality-driven support for a non-stop, high-volume logistics infrastructure.
Client & Stakeholder Communication
- Provide daily updates and maintain tight-knit, direct integration with the internal technology organization.
- Act as a dependable, self-driven team member who reduces the management burden on leadership (no babysitting required).
- Collaborate directly with internal dispatch, warehouse operations, finance, and external EDI trading partners.
Development, Maintenance & Operations
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and enhance core transport and warehouse applications running on IBM AS400 (iSeries) and the Trimble Innovative TMS platform.
- Develop and maintain applications utilizing RPG (and potentially COBOL).
- Handle routine system administration, ticket handling, and infrastructure operations including:
- Onboarding new customer/vendor accounts.
- Database purging and data cleanup.
- Troubleshooting blocked or failed communications.
- Printer setup and configuration (IBM, IP-sensitive).
Project Lifecycle, Migrations & Integration
- Actively support active, high-pressure migrations, including the current Geotab to Motive telematics transition (remapping APIs, webhooks, hours of service, locations, and driver pay for ~23M messages/week).
- Assist with upcoming infrastructure milestones, including an AS400 hardware migration and a major Trimble version upgrade.
- Manage, document, and test critical EDI processing, API mappings, and third-party integrations.
- Ensure near 100% quality deployment and testing, mitigating financial workflows risk within a limited/thin test environment.
Collaboration & Knowledge Capture
- Actively engage in intensive knowledge transfer with the current veteran contractor base to document and absorb vital tribal knowledge.
- Connect securely via AWS site-to-site VPN and manage versioned programs through GitHub.
Qualifications
- Fluent English (written and spoken) with exceptional communication skills (the 4 C's: communication, comprehension, common sense, and culture fit).
- Strong professional experience working with IBM AS400 (iSeries) environments.
- Deep hands-on experience with the Trimble Innovative TMS application (or closely related legacy enterprise TMS/Warehouse systems).
- Proficiency in RPG programming language (experience with COBOL is a strong plus).
- Proven experience managing EDI processing, API mapping, and data integrations.
- Strong familiarity with high-volume data streaming/messaging (handling millions of messages/transactions per week).
- Experience with AWS (specifically managing workflows over site-to-site VPN) and modern version control workflows using GitHub.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating high dependability in high-stakes, 24/7/365 production environments.
- Analytical mindset capable of reverse-engineering undocumented code and converting tribal knowledge into structured processes.
